A fine example of the open space principle “Whoever comes is the right people”. I had a 1:1 in-depth interview opportunity with Russell, an accountant, who went for the last conference. He sees experience design as being very relevant in how he can provide better service to his accounts clients.
What was learnt:
While people want to see more Asian speakers at the conference [What people say], their preference would be to attend an American/European speaker’s talk or workshop [What people do]. This was aligned to what actually happened in the previous two conferences.
Russell found that the American/European speaker he attended had workshop content that was too technical while the Asian speaker had a clear step-by-step case study that was more relevant for him. Ultimately, where a speaker comes from is NOT a good predictor of value to a conference participant.
We’ll have to design a way to help conference participants select talks/workshops by their experience and needs rather than first impressions.
Other things talked about:
The next conference’s theme and structure
[Off-topic] How to prototype and validate concepts quickly without code or design.
